Sidsmums Travellers Retreat is based in the 1,000 year old circulade village of Preixan on the outskirts of Carcassonne amongst the woodlands and vines of the Malepere Region.
This former Pressoir, Cuverie and Chai (a building where grapes were pressed, wine fermented in cuvees, and finally stored in barrels) was very important to the local community. All the grapes from the surrounding vineyards would be brought here to be pressed and stored. The original wine press is still downstairs in the building as are two 2,000 litre cuvees where the wine was fermented. The terrace at the rear of the property is actually built over the top of the two cuvees.
Above the front door to the gite look out for a beautiful relief capstone showing grapes being hand harvested.

The building was constructed in the 19th century by a man named Achille, as the village Cuverie. All the surrounding families and landowners would bring their grapes from their vineyards to the pressoir. Achille would buy the grapes, be paid, or take a proportion for the pressing of the grapes. The whole village would have been involved in this back breaking harvest and all the bulk handling was completed manually or with horses. Achille built a small cross not far from the property and the road was named after him Chemin de la Croix d Achille
